The Relationship Between Birth Order and Intelligence Essays
Debates on the relationship between birth order and intelligence have been remaining controversial. Birth order is considered as a persons ranking by age among his or her siblings. There have been numerous researchers studying about this subject to find whether firstborns generally have a higher IQ scores than their siblings. Some scientists conclude that birth order strongly influents intelligence; however, others oppose to this, claiming that birth order has no effect on intelligence. In this paper, my study deals with the birth order effects on intelligence. Investigation about the birth order effects first started in the late nineteenth century. Several researchers have claimed that the relation between birth order and intelligenceâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Some critics argue that three points do not seem like much; however, the impact can be enormous. ââ¬Å"Just 2.3 IQ points can correlate to a 15-point difference in SAT scores, which makes an even bigger difference when youre an Ivy League applicant with a 690 verbal score going head to head against someone with a 705.â⬠(Kluger). Some people suggest that the difference of IQ scores varies by family and does not show up in all family. ââ¬Å"The scientists then looked at I.Q. scores in 63,951 pairs of brothers, and found the same results.â⬠(Carey). To make sure the difference is not due to biological aspects, ââ¬Å"the researchers examined the scores of young men who became the eldest in the household after an older sibling had died. Their scores came out the same, on average, as those of biological firstborns.â⬠(Carey). Although there are a number of scientists supporting for the idea of being the firstborns is beneficial and advantageous, recent studies assert that the effects of birth order no longer are significant.
